Characteristics Of Yak Yarn
Yak fibre is a true luxury. Originating from Yaks in the Himalayas, each yak only produces 1kg of down a year! The yak naturally sheds its downy coat so no sheering is required making it one of the most animal friendly yarns.
As you would expect from himalayan yaks, their fibres are very warm, however due to a short staple length of the fibre, it is often blended with other fibres. These other fibres can make yak yarn a more versatile option with cotton blends being suitable for trans-seasonal garments and wool blends being ideal for your winter knits.
Benefits of Yak Yarn
Yaks are a very sustainable livestock as their hooves are gentle on the ground and they don't disturb the roots as they graze.
Yak fibres are very breathable and warm despite being lightweight so are a great addition to many yarns. Yak fibre does not tend to create a halo so yarns are often fuzz free.
Uses of Yak Yarn
Yak yarn is great for adding softness and warmth to other fibres. It can be used for garments as well as accessories.
Care of Yak Yarn
The yak fibre is very delicate so we recommend a gentle hand wash for most yak blends with wool wash or a mild detergent. It is also important to dry your knits flat to avoid stretching.
Selecting the right yarn
When selecting yarns it's important to be aware all yarns handle differently and will give varied textures and drape. This is why it's important to knit or crochet a gauge swatch. This allows you to both check the feel of the fabric and the needle size to use (again all knitters have a slightly different tension)
