Make It Your Own: Flax Sweater

In this series, we will be exploring the most popular online knitting and crochet designs, and highlighting yarns available at Morris and Sons that can be used to create your own unique and beautiful pieces! We will look at all styles of patterns, from a variety of designers around the world. Leave us a comment below if there is a particular pattern you would like to see featured in this series.

We start the series with the ever-popular Flax Sweater by Tin Can Knits. This pattern is regularly brought in by customers, and is the perfect option for your first garment!

With its unisex design, and sizes from newborn up to 6XL, you really can knit one for every family member. You can also tailor the fit! Knit a size with more or less positive ease than suggested, to give a tighter or looser fit to the jumper, depending on your style preferences.

The key feature of this design is its simplicity. It is a basic raglan jumper with a garter stitch detail along the shoulder, and down the sleeve. Its construction is top-down - you cast on at the neck, and work the raglan increases in the round, throughout the yoke. You then split for the sleeves and work the rest of the body. Once the main body is complete, you return to the sleeve stitches you have on hold, and work them down to the cuffs - no seaming necessary! The pattern is great for all skill levels, but especially for beginners, as there are accompanying tutorials for each step available.

The Flax Sweater is knit in a 10ply yarn, and we have some beautiful suggestions that work really well for this design.

Morris Estate 10ply is part of our essential range. Beautiful, durable and cost-effective, it is an excellent option for a sweater. With its amazing range of 60 colours, you are bound to be inspired. Included in the palette is a heathered range, featuring colours such as Rustic Aubergine and Sage, both very popular for sweaters. Estate is also machine washable up to 30°C, making it a very practical option.

Manos del Uruguay have two beautiful yarns that would work well for this sweater. Maxima is 100% Merino, making it a very soft, cosy option, and Alegria Grande is 75% Wool, 25% Polyamide - still soft, but a little more bouncy and smooth. Both these yarns are hand-dyed and come in a range of semi-solid and variegated options. If you love colourful sweaters, you can have a lot of fun playing with Manos del Uruguay yarns.

If you're all about texture, Rowan have some 10ply yarn options that are sure to delight! Felted Tweed Aran will, as the name suggests, give a rustic, tweedy look with flecks of different colours in the yarn. Or, if you are wanting a truly snuggly sweater, Kid Classic will give your garment a beautiful halo of fluff!
If you're confused about figuring out quantities for the yarns we have suggested, you needn't worry - we've done the maths for you! Below is a table listing the yarn requirements needed for each size, in each of the yarns mentioned in this post. While there is a cropped version of the sweater available, the yarn requirements listed are for the regular length only.

I really enjoy knitting but am very sensitive to wool. Are there any 10 ply options in cotton/silk/bamboo??
