Choosing Yarn For Stephen West's 2024 MKAL

Can you believe it’s that time of year again? Stephen West's 15th annual Westknits Mystery Knit Along (MKAL) has launched and this year’s design 'Go Go Dynamo' promises to be another bold, playful masterpiece!

To join the MKAL, you will need to sign up and purchase access separately through Ravelry or Westknits.com.

As the start date approaches, we’re busy selecting our yarns. If you’re unsure about what to choose for Stephen West's 2024 MKAL, we’ve got expert advice from our store managers, Catherine in Sydney and Kat from Katoomba, to help you make the perfect decision.

"I love participating in Stephen West's MKALs—they’re a fantastic way to learn new techniques and create impressive designs. Each year, I challenge myself to step out of my comfort zone with new colours and yarn types.

Last year, I tried Morris Avalon Cotton 4ply for the first time and enjoyed its smooth texture and crisp stitches. While cotton isn't as stretchy as wool, which made some areas more challenging, it was a fun new experience.

Though there was some criticism of last year’s initial design, I adapted it to suit my style, which made the process even more exciting. If you join the MKAL, don’t be afraid to break the rules and add a unique twist!"  — Kat, Katoomba Manager.

Catherine recommends using Patons Patonyle Artistry 4ply or our four Regia Premiums—Silk, Bamboo, Cashmere and Yak.

“If you’re after something lighter, try Morris Avalon Cotton 4ply or Rowan Summerlite. For a budget-friendly option, Morris Estate 4ply is a great choice”.
