How to Crochet a Bobble Stitch Bag

The bobble stitch, also known as the puff stitch, is a crochet classic with endless project possibilities. My favorite use for this stitch is creating stylish bags. The repetitive nature of the pattern makes it easy to follow and enjoyable to create. I always receive countless compliments on my bobble stitch bag wherever I go!  Below is the pattern I designed with options for both a strap and a strapless version. Pattern is in US Terms.

Please Note: Be prepared to make more than one, friends will love your bag so much they’ll want one for themselves!

How to Crochet a Bobble Stitch Bag

Size:  20 cm x 12.5cm H ,

Strap Measures: 70cm Long x 4cm W

You’ll Need:

Depending on the size you’d prefer for your bag, you may require more yarn than recommended here.

Pattern is in US Terms.

*SC = single crochet

Slipknot, Chain 24 (For different sizing, chain in multiples of two).

Row 1: *SC in every stitch

Creating the bobble

Yarn over the hook, insert the hook into the stitch and pull up a loop. Yarn over the hook, pull through 2 loops, you will have 2 loops on hook, yarn over the hook and insert the hook into the same stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over the hook, pull throw 2 loops, there should be 3 loops on hook, repeat more 2 times, at the end you will have 5 loops on the hook, yarn over the hook and pull through all loops. SC in the next chain.

For the First stitch of the row, complete a bobble with 4 loops on the hook rather than 5 as Chain the 3 counts as a loop. Continue each bobble as normal for the rest of the row.

SC in next stitch.

Row 2: Turn work and Chain three, bobble, SC in next stitch, bobble. Repeat and end on a bobble and chain one.

Row 3: Turn work and SC in each stitch

Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until there are 32 rows. Finish on a row of SC.

Finish here for a purse option or continue to add the strap.

Strap: Slipknot, Chain 84

Complete three rows of single crochet.

Attaching the strap:

Create a fold in the bag so that there is a gap between the two outer right-side-out faces.

Ensure there are 8 bobbles on each side, with the last rows of bobbles forming the base.

Attach the bag by working single crochets into each chain, keeping the right side facing out.
